Capital strengthens mining skills and community opportunity in Mingomba, Zambia

Capital is proud to share an update on our ongoing partnership launched in 2025 to strengthen mining-related skills development in local communities around the Mingomba project in Zambia.

In direct alignment with our CSI pillar of Decent Work and Economic Growth, the initiative is designed to improve access to economic opportunities by equipping young people with industry-relevant skills that allow them to benefit from current and future mining activities.

In recognition of this work, Capital was awarded the Mingomba Contractor Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Award in 2025, alongside the Safety Award.

Partnering with Don Bosco Technical Training College

Located in Chingola, Zambia, Don Bosco Technical Training College provides technical and vocational education to equip youth with skills to succeed in a competitive labour market.

During a first visit in 2025, Capital and Mingomba Mining Limited identified opportunities to strengthen Don Bosco’s capacity to deliver training relevant to the mining industry. While the college had strong foundations, there was opportunity to improve equipment, safety infrastructure, and first aid facilities to ensure students could be fully prepared for mining-related work.

This visit informed the structuring of the CSI program into two phases:

1. Phase 1: Establish safe training environment with upgraded facilities and equipment

2. Phase 2: Deliver longer-term socio-economic benefits with five student scholarships

Phase 1 (2025): Strengthening training capacity and safety

Phase 1 focused on strengthening Don Bosco’s capacity to deliver mining industry‑relevant training through:

Supplying equipment for the mechanical and metalworking programs.

• Metal Fabrication Workshop: Capital supplied a range of equipment to support hands-on mining-relevant skills, including a pedestal drill machine, welding machine set, welders’ gauntlet, pedestal drill, torque wrench and PPE)

• Automotive Engineering Workshop: Capital provided one second-hand four-cylinder diesel engine to shift training from petrol to diesel engines (dominant in mining).

Electrical upgrade in the hospitality section to ensure a safe training environment.

• Capital funded a complete electrical upgrade to ensure all wiring was safe and properly covered.

Equipping and stocking the first aid room to effectively manage occupational injuries.

• Capital equipped the room with beds, pillows, sheets, duvets, privacy screens, a fridge, a standard first aid kit, and a deluxe trauma emergency kit to better handle occupational injuries such as electrical burns.

Phase 2 (2026): Scholarships for local community students

This year we begin the second phase of support, sponsoring five students from communities surrounding the Mingomba project to complete one-year programs at Don Bosco Technical Training College:

• Electrical Installation: 1 student

• Metal Fabrication: 2 students

• Automotive Mechanics: 1 student

• Hospitality: 1 student

Upon completion, students will receive a Level 1 certificate in their respective disciplines.

The scholarship covers a variety of expenses and materials including:

• Tuition and examination fees

• PPE and course materials

• Accommodation at Don Bosco facilities

• Meals provided by the college

• Medical insurance

• Monthly stipend to cover living expenses and additional meals

To ensure students were fully prepared for the academic year, the Capital team provided additional hands-on support, including:

• Assistance with opening bank accounts

• Pocket money at the start of term

• Escorting students to orientation and settling them into accommodation

• Attending orientation alongside students

• Provision of bedding, kitchen utensils, pots and pans, and toiletries

The Mingomba CSI Initiative reflects Capital’s commitment to working alongside our clients to deliver shared value - building skills, improving safety, and creating pathways to employment that extend beyond the life of any single project.

Capital and Mingomba Mining Limited will continue working together to expand the initiative, including:

1. Providing ongoing student welfare and academic support

2. Exploring internship opportunities with Capital and our client for graduates

3. Supporting Don Bosco in the development of a dedicated Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) course

4. Identifying further opportunities to strengthen the college and benefit local communities
